Bathroom hand dryers are blowing poo particles all over you

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | A new study has shown that hand dryers are spraying poo at us. The paper – published in the Applied and Environmental Microbiology – studied hand dryers in public toilets at the University of Connecticut.

Previous studies like this one found that Dyson hand dryers spread germs more than any other. Apparently it all starts when you flush a toilet with the lid open.

This sends faecal particles into the air, where they linger until you turn on the hand dryer.

They’re then sucked into the dryer’s intake, heated up, and spat back out – all over your wet hands AKA the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive.

  1. Actually, paper towel dispensers just work better in general because they can just dry your hands so quickly. Don’t blow the germs around! I use a combination of air and paper when possible to dry my hands; I walk out with totally dry hands.
