Anthrax outbreak: Kabale authorities warn against importing animals from affected districts

KABALE DISTRICT AUTHORITIES: Butchers importing animals and animal products from affected districts stand warned.

Kabale, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Kabale district authorities have warned butchers and the public against importing animals and animal products from regions affected by Anthrax as Christmas and New Year celebrations approach.

Kabale, heavily reliant on animal products from districts like Ankole, Lyantonde, and Ssembalule, faces a risk of Anthrax exposure due to confirmed cases in Lyantonde and Kyotera. Recent incidents in Ibanda district saw five people hospitalized after consuming suspected contaminated meat.

Dr. Gilbert Mateeka, the Kabale District Health Officer, voiced concern over potential imports of infected animals or products during the festive season. He urged caution, advising consumers to only purchase meat inspected by veterinary authorities before slaughter.

Angella Anyongyeirwe, the Kabale District Veterinary Officer, highlighted their collaboration with law enforcement to prevent the importation of animals from high-risk areas, intending to arrest any individuals engaging in such practices.

Majugo Nasiima Rwanika, a caretaker at a Kabale abattoir, echoed the authorities’ sentiments, emphasizing their vigilance in sourcing animals exclusively from safe regions and subjecting every animal to veterinary inspection before slaughter.

Anthrax, caused by Bacillus anthracis bacteria, poses a significant threat, naturally occurring in soil and affecting various animals. Human infection occurs through contact with infected animals or contaminated products, leading to symptoms such as skin ulcers and respiratory issues. The warning aims to prevent potential exposure and safeguard public health during the festivities.
