AIGP OCHOM: Stop abusing body guards

Soroti, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Assistant Inspector General of Police, Edward Ochom has condemned the way some dignitaries treat police guards assigned for their protection.

Ochom said that the conduct of some principals compromises their own security but also affects the performance of the police guards on duty.

While passing out 164 Counter Terrorists and 64 Scenes of Crime Police personnel at Olilim Police Training School in Katakwi on Friday, Ochom said that some of the dignitaries have turned their police guards into political assistants who carry their bags while others have been turned into shepherds now milking cows; cleaning compounds and opening gates.

According to Ocom, they have come up with policies to guide both the dignitaries and the Police guards on their daily activities.

The trained Counter Terrorist personnel were among the last lot passed out from Masindi Police Training School recently. They have been training for 16 weeks to attain more skills in both physical and mental capabilities.

Ochom added that the kind of training undertaken by the officers will help the Police fight criminality and restore the image of the institution.

Jasper Oloka, the Commandant of the of Olilim Counter Terrorism Police Training School says they are retooling the officers by rehabilitating them from some unethical conduct in the field. One of the key areas targeted is fighting drug addiction including alcoholism from the Police personnel in the field.

Geoffrey Omolo, the Katakwi District Chairperson commended the Police for the effort in specialized trainings for their personnel. Omolo appealed to the Police top management to consider some slots for the community training on security matters to help them in  community policing.
