Age Limit case hearing resumes today

Kampala, Uganda | GODFREY SSALI | Hearing of the Age Limit case resumes today at the Constitutional Court sitting in Mbale.

Last week, the Court issued summons requiring ten government officials including the Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi David, Head of Public Service John Mitala, Mps ;Moses Grace Balyeku (NRM, Jinja East, Margaret Muhanga Mugisa (NRM, Burahya) and the Secretary to Treasury Keith Muhakanizi to appear today April 17, 2018 to be cross examined on the affidavits they swore in support of the already passed law.

Other officials expected in Court are; Police Officers; former Kampala metropolitan police commander Frank Mwesigwa and Assistant Inspector General of police Asuman Mugyeni, the clerk to parliament Jane Kibirige and the Sergeant at Arms Ahmed Kagoye .

However, the Court declined to summon the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga on grounds that she did not file any evidence in this case.

Five Justices of the Court led by the Deputy Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny Dollo also issued summons to Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze Bakireke to appear today for cross-examination by the Attorney General.

Nambooze filed an affidavit in this case over the alleged brutality of Security Personnel during the debating of the age – limit bill in parliament, in which she claims she was assaulted.

Petitioners in this case include the Uganda Law Society, Opposition Mps led by the Leader of Opposition Winnie Kiiza, City lawyer Male Mabirizi Kiwanuka and Aggrieved Citizens from Tooro Region among others.
