Accountant in Bududa arrested for forgery and theft of gov’t funds

Bududa, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | A sub-county accountant in Bududa district has been arrested over alleged of forgery and theft of government funds.

Rogers Mangoye, the accountant of Nakatsi sub-county is in police custody following his arrest on Monday after he failed to respond to police summons issued last month.

According to police, between February and August 2021, the suspect forged the signature of Grace Apolot, the sub-county chief which he used to draw up to 28 million Shillings from the sub-county account in Centenary bank.

Rogers Taitika, the Elgon Region Police Spokesperson says that Apolot registered a case of forgery vide G.E.F 07/2021. He says that they summoned the suspect to appear but he decided to go into hiding until he was picked up.

Apolot told police that the stolen money was meant to support the implementation of various projects which have since stalled due to lack of funding.
