A group of 400 Makerere University students have attempted to storm the university main building to protest not being listed for the 67th graduation ceremony to take place next week.

The Students’ Guild Prime Minister Stanley Oketcho supported the protest, saying  all those whose names are missing passed their exams and had cleared their tuition.

“The students were not cleared because their marks were not uploaded online to start processing their transcripts. The Academic Records Information System (ARIS) was down. That’s a fault of the university,”said Oketcho.

The aggrieved students say they cleared tuition and passed all subjects from the first to the final year as required, but their names were left out. The students say they want an explanation.

“The university has tossed me up and down. I am tired because when you go to the marks coordinator, when I reach his office he refers me to the dean who sends me to the academic registrar. I just want to graduate and go away from Makerere,”said Karamaji William, one of the affected students.

They have vowed to pitch camp at the University until their grievances are resolved.

When contacted, Makerer university Vice Chancellor Professor John Ddumba Ssentamu dismissed the claims as baseless stating that most of the students do not have marks.

“There could only about 30 people with missing marks and we have assured them that though their names are not on the list, the university is processing their transcripts,”said Ddumba.

Meanwhile, Makerere has released schedule for 67th graduation ceremony at the university’s freedom square. A total of 14,895 graduands will be awarded degrees and diplomas at the four-day ceremony to be held at the university’s Freedom Square.
