Twenty seven computers stolen from Nyairongo Seed Secondary School

Kikuube, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | A security guard and lab attendant have been arrested after 27 computers were found missing at Nyairongo Seed Secondary School in Kyangwali sub county in Kikuube District.

Unknown persons reportedly raided the school in the wee hours of Wednesday morning.

Estaliko Bendagumiza, the school headteacher told Uganda Radio Network in and interview that the school management realized on Wednesday morning that the 27 computers were missing in the lab.

He says the thugs gained entrance into the computer room after breaking the window.

He wonders how the thugs computers could be stolen from the school yet there are guards deployed to take charge of security at the school.

He says after the incident, they immediately notified the police who arrested  one of the school guards identified as Celestine Natukunda 32 and Sharif Besige, the assistant lab attendant.

Vincent Alpha Opio, the Kikuube LCV Vice Chairperson has described the theft of the computers as s big loss to the school tasking the police to expedite investigations to ensure that all the culprits are apprehended and recover the computers.

Desire Nkurunzinza, the Nyairongo village Chairperson says there could have been connivance between the school guards and the thugs.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson has confirmed the arrest and detention of the two suspects who are currently being detained at the Kikuube central police station stating that the hunt for more suspects is ongoing .

He says police recovered three computer monitors the thugs allegedly dumped by  the road side on the fateful day.

Hakiza has appealed to the public to cooperate with the police by availing crucial information that could lead to the arrest of more suspects believed to have participated in the theft of the computers.

The stolen computers, closed Circuit Television CCTV Cameras and other Information Technology (IT) equipment were procured in June 2022 by the Ministry of Education and Sports at a cost of153 million Shillings.

This is not the first time thugs have raided seed secondary schools in the Albertine region to still computers.

Last month, thugs raided Butiaba seed secondary school in Buliisa district and stole 21 computers that had been installed in the computer room.

They reportedly gained entrance into the computer room. Through the window that they broke.

This resulted into the arrest and detention of two suspects including Godfrey Rwamukaga and Alfred Bigirwenkya both guards attached to the school. They have since been remanded.

In November 2022, unknown thugs raided Kigorobya Seed Secondary school in Hoima district and made off with 16 computers.

The 16 stolen computers were part of the 29 newly installed computers at the school.
