Madi-Okollo, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | As the final exams for Primary Seven candidates draw close, several primary schools in Madi-Okollo district have adopted a team teaching approach to address the low syllabus coverage.
Team teaching, also known as co-teaching or “tag team teaching,” involves two or more teachers conducting a lesson simultaneously, taking turns teaching the whole class. The primary goal is to make the best use of available time and ensure intensive teaching to cover the syllabus adequately.
The decision to implement this approach was prompted by a recent school inspection report from the district education department, which highlighted the challenge of low syllabus coverage for primary seven candidates.
Kazimiro Ezaruku, the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of Madi-Okollo district, explained that their inspection revealed that many schools were still focused on completing the syllabus when they should be fine-tuning the preparations for the upcoming Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE).
According to George Ayiba Butele, the District Education Officer, it’s crucial for all teachers in the schools to actively participate in the preparation of primary seven candidates. He stressed the importance of engaging teachers as team instructors to ensure that the candidates are well-prepared for the exams.
Elisa Adriko, the head teacher of Oribu Primary School, noted that team teaching has significantly improved the candidates’ ability to comprehend and grasp the material. She expressed optimism about the positive outcomes of this teaching model in preparation for the upcoming final examinations.
Isaac Bayo, the head teacher at Ajinia Hill Primary School, mentioned that although they didn’t register candidates for the upcoming PLE, they have implemented the team teaching model for other classes.
The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has announced that this year’s PLE will begin with candidate briefings on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. The written exams will take place on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, with mathematics and social studies in the afternoon.
The exams will conclude on Thursday, November 9, 2023, with integrated science exams in the morning and English in the afternoon, as per the UNEB timetable.
