Prison warder Anguyo, three relatives remanded to Kitalya Prison

Wakiso, Uganda | URN | The Kiboga Grade One Magistrate’s Court has remanded a prison warder, Moses Anguyo, to Kitalya Prison on charges related to the killing of four people. Anguyo, an officer attached to Kiboga Prisons, appeared before Grade One Magistrate Jonard Tusasirwe and was charged with seven counts, including four counts of murder, two counts of aggravated robbery, and one count of threatening to kill.

Prosecution, led by Senior State Attorney Stephen Ariong, told the court that on February 23, 2026, Anguyo allegedly, with malice aforethought, caused the deaths of ASP Hope Catherine, POI Bright Akishuri, Sarah Ayebare, and Salson Niwagaba. The offences are said to be contrary to Sections 171 and 172 of the Penal Code Act. The court also heard that Anguyo allegedly threatened to kill ASP Ivan Niwagaba, the officer in charge of Kiboga Prisons, an offence contrary to Section 77(a) of the Penal Code Act.

In addition, the prosecution stated that Anguyo is accused of robbing a pair of jeans from a shop belonging to Grace Katusiime and a T-shirt from Mary Nabayiga using a firearm, contrary to Sections 266 and 267(2) of the Penal Code Act. Anguyo appeared in court alongside his girlfriend, Hellen Amviko, and two brothers, Peter Anziku and Peter Anziku alias Dickson Okuonzi. The three were charged with assisting him to escape arrest, contrary to Section 366 of the Penal Code Act.

The prosecution asked the court for an adjournment, noting that investigations are still ongoing and that the magistrate’s court lacks jurisdiction to try capital offences. Magistrate Tusasirwe remanded all the accused to Kitalya Prison until April 24, 2026, when the case will return for mention.

The accused were later transported under tight security in a prison bus to Kitalya Prison. Anguyo was arrested on Saturday in Aru Town in the Democratic Republic of Congo by a joint security team before being extradited to Uganda. His arrest followed intelligence reports after security intercepted his communication with the co-accused, who had allegedly aided his escape.
