THIS WEEK: Kagame scoffs at critics of Rwanda’s democracy model as he launches campaign

Rwanda’s president Paul Kagame launched his first rally on July 14 criticizing his opponents for railing against Rwanda’s model of democracy. He said their move is a waste of time as most Rwandans are already impressed by the model although outsiders call it undemocratic.

“In democracy, the most important thing is the will of the people, which is informed by what they want, what they feel and how they want things to be. That is the first step,” he said.

However, for Kagame who is standing on Rwanda Patriotic Front party to stand again, Rwandans had to conduct a referendum in 2015 that lifted presidential term limits. Elections are set to be held on August 04.

  1. The transformation from the brink of a failed state in 1994, to one of the fastest growing economies in Africa, with an average growth of nine per cent between 2000 and 2014, is not by chance but because of the good governance and visionary leadership of President Kagame.
