A United States supported program to help spark explosive growth in the agriculture sector by bringing together some of Uganda’s most-trusted, powerful, and well-known sector leaders has been launched in Kampala.

The Leveraging Excellence in Agricultural Development program, part of President Obama’s Feed the Future initiative, will bring together 17 of the sector leaders to identify solutions to Uganda’s agricultural problems.

According to the US Mission in Uganda that initiated the programme this week, the activity aims to support the acceleration of country’s transition to a prosperous and modern country. This will be done by helping to improve the enabling environment for agriculture production, trade, youth employment, and adaptation to climate change.

Launched by Uganda President Yoweri Museveni and US Mission Ambassador Deborah R. Malac at Speke Resort in Munyonyo on Tuesday, the Leveraging Excellence in Agricultural Development program will encourage public-private collaboration among experts and innovators in the agricultural sector.

“It is our hope that participants in this inaugural program will identify ways to help remove policy and regulatory constraints in the agricultural sector, strengthen the capacity of the Ugandan Government to facilitate agricultural development and adaptation to climate change, and build the capacity of private sector and civil society organizations to help government implement sound policy choices,” Ambassador Malac said, adding that “In short, we want to strengthen public-private cooperation.”

According to the US Mission, the inaugural year of the program will engage 17 agricultural sector leaders – individuals committed to helping Uganda achieve its agricultural potential. The program will leverage the wisdom, experience, and talent of these leaders to solve problems in the agriculture sector and help accelerate growth.

The US Mission added that the Leveraging Excellence in Agricultural Development is part of the US government’s Enabling Environment for Agriculture Activity, a five-year program that began in 2013, and an element of Feed the Future, President Obama’s worldwide initiative to enhance food security and nutrition.

Later, Museveni stressed the importance of agriculture in Uganda’s plans to reach Middle-Income status.

“We must move to total commercialization of agriculture through Operation Wealth Creation,” he told his new cabinet at their swearing in.
