THIS WEEK: CAF drops Cameroon as 2019 AFCON hosts

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has withdrawn the hosting rights for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) from Cameroon. “Today [Nov 30], the Executive Committee met in Accra, Ghana and has decided that the Cameroon FA could not host the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations,” said a brief communication from CAF.

The development follows cries of political instability in Cameroon and slow progress on the readiness of the facilities. “Cameroon has been stripped off rights to host after the infrastructure has been found not to be ready by June 2019 despite commendable efforts. It has been a huge and hard decision that CAF had to take,” a CAF executive committee member told URN.

He said another country will be announced after the bidding and evaluation by December 31. “It is open to all other CAF members that can meet the terms and conditions,” added the source.

The hosting of the 2019 AFCON has become a contentious issue following the Confederation of African Football’s decision to expand the tournament from 16 to 24 teams. URN
