Focus back on Parliament as ‘Age Limit’ debate rages

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Focus is back on Uganda’s Parliament when MPs return to The House Tuesday at 2pm to continue business that was pushed forward from last week.

Speaker Rebecca Kadaga is chairing today’s session that is expected to set in motion proposals to change the constitution to remove the age limit of presidential candidates.

NRM Chief Whip Ruth Nanakabirwa confirmed that her members will move a motion when the session starts, to include a notice of motion on “Age Limit” on the Order Paper. The Order Paper released yesterday does not include the “Age Limit.”

MP Raphael Magyezi (Igara West,NRM) is expected to present a motion seeking leave of parliament to introduce an omnibus Private Member’s Bill to amend Articles 102 (b), 108(3a) and 108(4). It will be a significant step towards lifting the 75 year limit for presidential candidates and securing a free run for President Yoweri Museveni to seek re-election in 2021

The Deputy Speaker Jacob Oulanyah decided last Thursday to adjourn The House to Tuesday due to chaotic scenes in parliament as MPs argued about how security had hampered business in The House ahead of a then anticipated showdown on the “Age Limit” constitutional changes.

Magyezi’s proposal to seek leave of parliament to introduce a Private Member’s Bill to amend the constitution was not even on the Order Paper Thursday afternoon, but that did not diffuse tension that had been building all day.

Chaotic scenes in and outside Uganda’s parliament were relayed live on television, as opponents and supporters of proposed amendments to the constitution, dubbed the “Age Limit Motion” argued their cases, many times physically.

“There are two problems and they are big problems; one is that members are not ready to sit and the second problem is that the speaker is not ready to chair a parliament that does not want to sit. Therefore, this house is adjourned to Tuesday at 2:00 o’clock,” ruled Oulanyah.

Leading opposition figures have said they will continue their protests against the “Age Limit” proposals Tuesday when business resumes in parliament.

  1. M7 should leave the chair, DO NOT TOUCH THE ARTICLE 102b OF THE. CONSTITUTION

  2. ANGUANDIA PEACEMAKER

Lifting Presidential age limit will give chance to some fake politicians to spoil Uganda’s political future, I therefore rubbish on the bill & some MP’s who are disgruntled am sure are happy because they want to enrich themselves at the expense of the poor electorates who voted for them.

  3. please dont tarnish uganda’s name, we also want those sits your fighting for so leave the constitution and give us a chance also to try
