
It is Cardinal Robert F. Prevost who has been serving as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops.
Vatican, Rome | VATICAN NEWS | The 133 Cardinal electors gathered in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel have elected a new Pope. Pope Leo XIV, 69 years old, has just appeared at the central window of St. Peter’s Basilica. He is the first Pope born in the United States and first North American Pope.
Born and raised in Chicago, Robert Francis Cardinal Prevost entered the novitiate of the Order of Saint Augustine in 1977 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1981.
The first-ever American pope, Prevost served most recently as the head of the Church’s Dicastery for Bishops and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.
