Wolokosso is another word that has gained dominance in this 2011 election campaign. It is Luganda slang that means hot air or empty talk. At rallies opposition candidates have been quoted saying the ruling NRM government has promised wolokoso for over 25 years and the NRM candidates also say that their government has delivered their promises unlike the opposition that promises wolokoso. The word was popularized by an airtel telecom advert by comedian Kato Lubwama but there is also a song named woloko by a local artist Dj Micheal. However, the word gained more momentum when the Citizens Coalition for Electoral Democracy (CCEDU) launched the slogan “Honour your vote, vote issues not wolokoso”. Continue reading
It is interesting how comic words like pakalast have come to dominate the speeches of politicians in this election campaign. Pakalast which means ‘until the end’, is increasingly being used at campaign rallies by both the opposition candidates and the NRM. The word gained its fame from a song Pakalast by local artist Rocky Giant. It was later taken up by Warid Telecom which still uses it for one of its signature products where clients load airtime worth shs 1500 and talk for 24 hours.
