Chris Mubiru’s inadvertent gay allies

The more the Red Pepper publishes his pornographic pictures, the more it brings gay sex out of the closet

Since Chris Mubiru became a mega celebrity in Uganda, the pro-gay rights lobby has withdrawn into resigned silence – sensing a reversal of “the cause”. Two current members of parliament and a former one who had written articles opposing the hang-the-gays bill for The Independent withdrew them before we went to press. They claimed the atmosphere was too charged and they “did not want to be misunderstood”. It is funny how fear of being “misunderstood” i.e. moral cowardice, governs our lives. At a point when people need to stand up in defense of their beliefs and values, they bulk.

As Red Pepper continued its publication of Mubiru’s pornographic pictures, the anti gay lobby was ridding unprecedented momentum. With a tidal wave of public anger on their side, the bill may now sail through parliament easily. Pastor Martin Ssempa took the initiative to launch his foray against gays – again making no distinction between sex acts between two consenting adults and those of adults with minors. To many inside and outside Uganda, the cause for gay rights seemed lost as the pictures incite the worst homophobia in years. Yet I think the best thing to have happened to the cause of gay rights in Uganda was Red Pepper publication of Mubiru pictures.

The best way to fight bigotry and prejudice is to generate public debate about the issue under contention. Constant conversation and debate about a contentious issue promotes the spread of knowledge which in turn fosters tolerance leading to acceptance. When any new idea is suggested, it is initially rejected, then debated, later accommodated and, sometimes, finally accepted. This is what we learn from Galileo, when he first suggested that the world is round; or from Charles Darwin, when he published his theory of evolution. In both cases, their findings produced condemnation with the church leading the attack. After heated debate, people began to listen more, learn and understand. Today, most enlightened people believe the world is round.

It is for this reason that although the subjective motivation for MP David Bahati to introduce his anti-gays bill was bad for the gays, the objective outcome of his action will be good for gay rights in Uganda. The Bahati bill has generated the most debate on gay rights. With time, it will lead to tolerance and acceptance. Many people miss this critical part of the democratic process i.e. that society’s beliefs do not change overnight.  There is a time lag between when debate begins and when society begins to change its prejudices.

Yet the Western world disregards this process and insists by using blackmail (threats to cut aid) and intimidation (through diplomatic pressure), to arm twist our governments to change their stance. This is one way the West undermines democracy even though it is often driven by a desire to promote it. You cannot promote tolerance by forceful means. You do that through persuasion, which takes time. Even a tyranny cannot change people’s beliefs over night – however stupid they may sound – except at extremely high human cost as in China’s Cultural Revolution.

For now, we can speculate that the Mubiru pictures will achieve the opposite effect. Rather than promote homophobia, they are most likely going to reduce it. The Red Pepper with pictures of Mubiru in gay sex acts sold heavily. And they have been printing them daily for two weeks now. And this is the paradox: If people in Uganda hate homosexuality, why are they so excited to watch gay porn? A gay friend told me that many Ugandans, including those who speak loudest against gays, are closet homosexuals. He claims that their homophobia is one way of hiding their true feelings.

I suspect most homosexuals tend to claim their community is larger than it is perhaps to overcome a sense of isolation they feel. And this self-deception, albeit subconscious, perhaps helps them feel they are not minority after all. In Robert Trivers most recent book, The Folly of Fools; The Logic of Deceit and Self-Deception, this Harvard-based evolutionary biologist and socialbiologist says that our minds are wired to engage in “confirmation bias,” which makes us seize on facts that bolster our preconceptions and overlook contradictory data. We wittingly and unwittingly interpret or even manipulate facts to promote our biases and agendas.

In here lies the complexity of human sexual (or social) psychology. Once a society prohibits something it makes it novel and therefore intriguing. This drives people’s curiosity – an intense desire to find out. It is less likely that if the images were of heterosexuals, they would have attracted as much public interest as they have done. The urge to find out, to discover the unknown, the hidden is actually a central fact in the human desire to learn. I even suspect that the more Ugandan public opinion speaks loudest against homosexuality, the more young people will be tempted to experiment with it. The most drunkards tend to come from families where alcohol drinking is rigorously prohibited. This tends to create curiosity and thereby experimentation.

Secondly, when many people first saw the Mubiru pictures, they were appalled and felt he should be banished from earth. If Red Pepper continues, as it is doing now, to publish them, people will get used to seeing men having sex with men. Initially, they may not accept it as normal. But many will begin to tolerate it as part of the menu of the many happenings in our country. If more gay porn of the Mubiru type keeps hitting the newsstands in Uganda over the next two years, by 2015, many people in this country will have grown to accept homosexuality as normal. The best immunization against homophobia is to have gay porn as part of the daily news menu.

What is intriguing is the failure of the pro gay lobby in Uganda to see the coup that Red Pepper has handed them. Instead, most of them have focused on the subjective motivations by Red Pepper to print the pictures i.e. its self acclaimed mission to “expose the vice”. But Red Pepper is not just exposing “the vice”. The law of unintended consequences will apply i.e. that they are making gays sex acts normal and thereby making homosexuality tolerated – the step on the journey to acceptance.

One cavil in an otherwise brilliant article - Galileo was a proponent of heliocentrism rather than spherical earth theory: the principle that the earth is in the orbit of the Sun (which ran counter to the 'geocentric' orthodoxy of the day that the Sun and all other celestial bodies are in the orbit of the Earth). Let us hope that Uganda reconciles itself to homosexuality quicker than it has taken the Catholic Church to bury the hatchet with Galileo. Nearly four centuries after having killed him, the closest the leadership of the Catholic Church has come to admitting it was wrong about Galileo is to mumble vague expressions of regret.
Economic boycotts are the only answer
written by Lelio Risen, December 23, 2012
If Ugandans were oppressing women, or a minority religious group, to the point where they were rounding up people and incarcerating them, the only answer would be diplomatic sanctions. Despite the rhetoric, the lives of gay individuals are not less worthy than any other group.

If you continue your determination to harass and opprerss the gay Ugandans in your midst, feel free to get your financial aid from other countries. Gay Americans will not have our tax dollars supporting anything that comes from Uganda. You reap what you sow.

One would think that a country that knows what it is like to have their citizenry brutalized would be more sensitized to brutalizing others. Obviously not, in this case.

What would have happened if Mubiru's laptop wasn't stolen and the said videos made public - he would be happily conscripting more into the vice clandestinely. How come the never victims never spoke out or complained- could they also be gay? Its highly unlikely they are not and that is what really scares me. The person next to you, it could be the loving husband, a son or daughter, brother or sister or even the loving wife. The extent to which to homosexuality has grown in Uganda is hard to determine but Mubiru's revelations are very telling of the situation.

Copernicus and Martin Luther Defeated Aristotleanism and Church: Copernicianism and Protestantism
written by Ocheto, December 24, 2012
The Catholic Church is not that invincible nor is the pope infallible. Martin Luther mocked and ridiculed the corrupt church and the pope practices for accepting payments -- so-called indulgences -- to buy pardon from the church. He single handedly through a rebellion created Protest-antism that became dominant religion and reigning thought to date. But (the English) kings used to behead too. Heliocentricity (Copernicus) replaced geo-centricity (Aristotle). Galileo was beheaded more for insisting that the earth was flat or not spherical, than for heliocentricity, Copernicus theory as opposite to Aristotle geo-centricity. This also the time Aristotle-ism was, after being discarded for long, revived and taught in the church.
Rape is a Weapon of War
written by Ocheto, December 24, 2012
Rape is used as weapon of war, especially now in the Great Lakes region with its endless wars and conflicts. But shameless Ugandan media uses pornographic images of not only rape and sex but also pictures of grotesquely bloodied and mutilated bodies to sell papers.
Lelio Risen - Keep your Aid
written by Birungi, December 24, 2012
Lelio, typical of you and your governments to threaten us with the withdraw of aid. Please go ahead! Do you think Uganda would cease to exist when USA aid is cut-off. It is unfortunate that you missed Andrew's point. Again as the article says, you cannot promote tolerance by forceful means. In your own country, how many states recognize your gay marriages? even many of those who accept it are bullied into acceptance. If the so-called developed world is still just coming to terms with the concept of accepting homosexuality why do you expect Ugandans, Africans to wake up one morning and embrace it? Just because you give us aid! how pathetic!!! If it is natural as you claim, then it is inevitable that we will accept it, let it take its course instead of forcing it down our throats.

NATURE CANNOT BE OVERTAKEN BY NURTURE
written by Jimmy Wambede, December 25, 2012
Gays and their supporters have been NURTURED to believe that homesexuality is natural and therefore ought to be acceptable. But NATURE can (and will) only perpetuate life (generation to generation ) if we submit ourselves to the natural LAW OF OPPOSITES - a male marrying a female. Gays or lesbians CANNOT reproduce and multiply on their own. We ought to remember that the vast majority of Africans are faithful followers/carriers of their cultures where homosexuality is not acceptable.

This is a great Christmas gift to the LGBTI community, and I want to thank you for finally saying something..u see when certain issues of great controversy come up every section of society looks to its opinion leaders for guidance. Many Ugandans are failing to divorce Chris Mubiru from the nature of the LGBTI as a community and as my good friend Pepe Julian Onziema says he has fast become the standard Unit for all Homosexuals which I think is absurd as there is bad seed in both heterosexuals and homosexuals..but then again I expected a certain section of society to know this. Red Pepper may help in demysifying homosexuality but its methods are unothodox and its timing it just bad..Thank you very much and a happy new year

There is need for research on gays
written by Tina, December 26, 2012
I wonder how someone in their right state of mind allows to be gay There is need for research on Gays and Lesbians i think its not a matter of rights otherwise if there was no law against defilement, incest, rape all minority groups would have as well risen up to claim that they prefer children of 12 years and to have sex with their sisters, brothers, parents and so on. there are 2 ring leaders of gay rights that i went to school with one would fear that person x was going to have a bath near their bathroom. i always wondered why these girls looked like boy from the body structure to the way they walked i would further ask myself why they preferred fellow girls to boys perhaps by the nature of their bodies or they had genes for men non of the above or i was wrong.

On a related note, tyrannies cannot change people's beliefs overnight, but sometimes the cultivation of "tolerance" is not the immediate goal. As an American, I think of the ways in which federal law was imposed on the South to outlaw Jim Crow (and slavery, for that matter) despite white Southerners' continued howls about the antidemocratic character of "Northern aggression." And of course, Hitler came to power through democratically elected majorities. Perhaps public debate, not war, was the better option in the 30s and 40s, too? The deification of democratic debate and "persuasion" has its limits. Certain columnists should take note.

@Elizabeth Allen
written by Omeros, December 28, 2012
Hi Elizabeth - what you say is very interesting indeed. You are of course right that Southern intransigence over Jim Crow (the 'unending revenge for Gettysburg') was politically overcome by the passage of civil rights legislation. But let's not forget that the passage of that legislation in the 60s was itself the successful culmination of a series of attempts at guaranteeing the citizenship of African Americans (there had been civil rights acts of 1866, 1871, 1875, 1957, 1960 and 196smilies/cool.gif and that the social change that ultimately broke the South's 'massive resistance' was incremental. Seen in its proper historical context, the accommodation of civil rights in the US was the product of a long political negotiation.
...
written by Omeros, December 28, 2012
Sobering as the prospect may be, the accommodation of homosexuality in Uganda, which is every bit a struggle for the recognition of a civil right, will also entail a long political negotiation. That fight will be won - there is only so long that a society can sustain a collective delusion - but it will most likely be won after a lengthy struggle during which time progressive members of Ugandan society will steadily chip away at the prejudice that nurtures sexual bigotry. Just as in the US white supremacy triumphed in the era of Reconstruction but was ultimately defeated as a political institution a century later, so too, over time, will the homophobes of Uganda who today occupy the ascendancy in their turn experience defeat in the face of sustained pressure on their views and characters.
...
written by Omeros, December 28, 2012
This is not to encourage complacency and suppose that closed minds will change themselves - I do, after all, envisage a struggle in which homophobic attitudes are challenged repeatedly and loudly. But we live in a Uganda that is not prepared to debate the issue of homosexuality, still less to revise its view of the practice. And in the teeth of such intransigence - for intransigence is what it is - it is only sensible to recognise that the struggle for equal recognition will be long.

If a behaviour is not straight then it is crooked, bad and not natural. the gay's can go to Europe and America and practice their vice with all the freedom they need. please let our children grow into normal human beings.

As i write this i know it will be removed but it’s worth a try.
First of all i would award our dear president the highest honour in the land because he has perfected his ways of ruling Ugandans over the past 25 years.

He knows all the tricks of the game and he has done very well.
On the other hand for the rest of the Ugandans we have been poor scholars. We learnt nothing from the past.

Ugandans are so divided and interested in personal gains. Because of this we have a life president, we have no freedom of expression. The phones, internet, everything is tapped.
Things will never change until our attitudes change.

Homosexuality either perfectly abnormal or imperfectly normal
written by Denis Musinguzi, December 30, 2012
Omeros, being gay is never at all in any community, including those that have formally allowed public gay marriages such as Canada, agreed as a perfectly normal practice, but as an "orientation" for various reasons that should be tolerated. I was in Canada for the last half of 2011, I interacted with many people including those in the medical, security, legal profession, and various human rights activists, and learn't that while gay marriages are permissible publicly, more than half of gay couples still prefer not getting public. The practice is tolerated due to improved levels of liberalism and submissiveness, but not taken as the proper sexual orientation

HOW MUCH BRAINWASH CAN PEOPLE STAND?! SAD. SAD. SAD.
Homosexuality neither such thing, Denis.
written by Omeros, December 31, 2012
Denis, 'homosexuality' is a sexual orientation in the same way as is 'heterosexuality'. Every single major psychiatric association including the American Psychological Association, the Canadian Psychological Association and the Royal College of Psychiatrists consider homosexuality to be a normal variant of human sexuality (see, for example, the APA's 2007 amicus brief to the Supreme Court of California recommending in the strongest possible terms against the use of so called 'reparative therapy').

It is in the face of, among other things, such overwhelming and compelling evidence from the mental health industry (which used to understand homosexual orientation as a disorder but resiled from that position more than 30 years ago) that homosexuality is normal that each of the legal justifications for discriminatory practices against gay people have fallen away.
...
written by Omeros, December 31, 2012
It is only religiously-inspired fringe opinion rather than mainstream clinical opinion that continues to insist that homosexuality is abnormal (see for example NARTH). That some gay people do not advocate marriage equality is somewhat beside the point as to whether homosexuality is normal (which it is). It is in the light of, among a host of other things, the clinical evidence of the mental health profession that homosexuality is a normal and positive variant of human sexuality that the false dichotomy that homosexuality is either 'perfectly abnormal or imperfectly normal' (sophistry if ever I saw it) is to be rejected and indeed condemned.
What is "normal" about homosexuality?
written by Rajab Kakyama, January 01, 2013
I am at pains contributing to such a topic. But for purposes of clarity, normal is defined as "usual or regular" What is so usual and regular of a man sexually submitting to a fellow man? What is so usual of a man penetrating a fellow man's anus? How will the "kids" in a homosexual relationship relate with the two "parents?" who will be the mother and who will be the father? In struggling to find excuses as answers to these questions, we are not only trying to redefine "normal" but also trying to find a whole new "purpose" to life.

yes the author is absolutely correct, long term people will get bored and ask why parliament is targeting these people and not fixing the big issues, though that does little for the individuals victimized. I think we need not forget that every soul is important and nobody deserves to be treated this way. Actually it was the West who both promoted sexual identification and spread fears and hate against gay and lesbians, and more recently spreading the paranoia to African parliamentarians. The West must bear the responsibility for the persecution of Ugandan gays and lesbians, before colonization gay people existed but nobody cared because they fulfilled family duties, the Africans of that era are far wiser and would have laughed and said, why you worry about silly things?
