Road signs are criticalfor your safety

Safety signs have become a common feature in almost every aspect of human life. They are necessary because safety is of paramount importance, and cannot be neglected in any case. Whether you are driving on a road or walking on the sidewalk, you have to follow the road safety signs.

Similarly, in case of an excavation or other construction project, you have to follow the signs placed on the exteriors; otherwise, there could be serious accidents and loss of life.

Safety signs are a legal requirement; local and national government can take the responsible persons to court or cancel their licence if they have not placed the respective safety signs around their area of work. Public safety department is highly efficient in the United Kingdom and does not tolerate any breach of law.

Following is a brief introduction of safety signs and their usefulness in keeping the human lives safe and secure:

Road Signs

The most common safety features are the road signs. They are placed at all major locations of a road, especially at places with any danger or important work going on. The most common road feature is the no parking sign. This is used to inform the drivers that the area is not used for parking vehicles and they should avoid it; otherwise, they can face fines and lifting of their car by the traffic constables. Apart from the no parking sign, the safety signs include a dangerous curve sign, school or hospital ahead, speed breakers and railway crossing, among others. These signs help in ensuring security of not only the drivers but the general population. In case a driver fails to follow these signs, a dangerous accident can happen. Railway crossings are particularly dangerous as there have been many incidents where cars were crushed away by a fast moving train.

Construction Safety Sign

These signs are also commonly found along roads and other construction sites. The most common sign among them is the “Men at Work” sign that is used to caution people and drivers that construction work is going ahead and they should change their route. Similarly, excavation work on a road follows the same sign although sometimes they place road barriers instead of just erecting a safety sign. This approach is more useful as drivers have to change their route because of diversions, and the chances of any accident remains lower. They can neglect the sign but they cannot neglect the road barriers, as they can damage their vehicle by hitting these barriers.

One fundamental element of driving that should never be missed out is the comprehensive knowledge on road or traffic signs. Every good driver takes a firsthand discipline course in knowing these signs.

Every traveller, may he be a passenger or a driver may have noticed along the road side various sign boards that serve important purposes. These road reminders stand as route guides, warning and traffic flow regulator for motorists and pedestrians likewise. As control devices for traffic, signs need full attention, respect and adequate drivers’ response.

For the beginner’s information, traffic signs are positioned on places that engineers have justified through their studies. Oftentimes, these are placed beside or above the highways or streets. If the positioning of the signs is not supported by any visual considerations or expert reasons, these may become destructive rather than effective means of guiding the motorists. When a lot of signs are standing near each other, it could lead to confusion and worsening of traffic flow, plus, fund for public works are not utilised properly. Not only that, it could also lead to misunderstandings of drivers and authorities as well that might lead to more problems and the worst accidents.

With the possibility of road confusions, there are different shapes and colours aside from the symbols that are designated and printed on these traffic devices. Shapes are assigned to make the signs easily recognisable and the number of sides speaks how critical the message is.

There are some shapes marking various places such as schools, which are designated with a pentagon shape, a trapezoid for recreational sites and other irregularly shaped signs.

On the other hand, signs are not about shapes at all. Colours are also factors included in effective transmittal of messages. Standard background colours like red is used for stop, yield, do not enter and wrong way signs, markers that give you instant warning even from afar. Green is used for guide information, orange for temporary traffic controls, yellow for warning and school signs, brown for recreational sites and blue for emergency evacuation routes.

Stating the abovementioned reasons and assigned media, we find the importance of understanding the messages traffic signs represent. In most countries and their respective transportation sectors, there are standard rules being observed and implemented.  Drivers are all bound to know the signs. Simple as it might seem, details of the signs are important to control discipline on the road.

There are too many drivers out there that aren't aware that the road signs keep them safe. I wish it were more like europe though because they use a lot more yield signs. They just like stop signs in america because they like to give out tickets...
