Uganda’s telecom companies have urged the public who haven’t registered to do so before deadline to avoid being cut off the network come March 1, 2013.
Speaking at a joint news conference in Kampala on Sept. 18, companies said the exercise had slowed down due to the people’s perception that there is more time for them to register.
“We want all our customers to register in time so that we can all move at the same level,” Jael Christine, director customer service at airtel said.
David Holliday, the managing director Uganda telecom said the registration was important to enable the Uganda Communications Commission and the security agencies to handle crimes related to the mobile phone. “We are moving on well,” Holliday said adding, but we are urging all those who haven’t registered to do so.
Uganda has about 17million mobile phone subscribers. The UCC says 40% out of the 17million have so far registered and they expect all subscribers to register by March 1, 2013.
“We will not extend the deadline,” he said. “Anyone who fails to register by that time their cards will automatically be deactivated.”
Geodfrey Mutabazi, executive director UCC said in a statement that for the next six months the Commission and the operators will embark on serious sensitisation of the public about the exercise.
“UCC in collaboration with the operator will hold a joint-out-reach in major towns and suburbs in the country starting end of October, 2012,” he said.
