President Museveni will on Sept. 21 launch the ‘Youth Go Green’ campaign at Mandela National Stadium in Kampala.
The event targets one million youth to plant one million trees. Edwin Muhumuza, its coordinator says they plan to plant 10 million trees with in five years. He says after planting 20 million seedlings in various regions because of their environmental status, they are now ready to go national with their campaign.
Youth GO Green is partnering with the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) to plant trees along its national corridors but they had insufficient resources.
Speaking at a press conference in Kampala, Patrick Kamanda, UNRA’s environmental specialist said the roads authority welcomes the group’s launch of the tree planting campaign on the Northern By-pass in Kampala. He said other roads to benefit include all those that have been upgraded across Uganda such as the Soroti-Dokolo-Lira road, Kampala-Gayaza-Zirobwe road, Busunju-Kiboga road, Mityana-Kiboga road.
Kamanda added that UNRA will allocate portions of road corridors for tree planting to organisations that will apply and fit the UNRA guidelines on road reserve tree planting. He said these trees will be planted three metres away from the road in urban areas and six metres away from the road in rural areas and that only specified species of trees will be used in road side forestation.
National Forestry Authority and the ministry of Water and Environment will donate the seedlings to be used in this nation- wide campaign.
Muhumuza urged youths to come up in numbers and stop deforestation adding that sensitisation is going to be at district level and the tree seedlings will be given for planting to persons with enough knowledge on the Go Green Campaign.
Angela Katatumba, a local musician and the ‘Go Green’ ambassador urged celebrities to go for the “Celebrity Planting Program” on Sept. 19. She urged youths to be there.
