Ugandan women and girls will be some of the beneficiaries of family planning services after global leaders pledged to provide contraceptives to 120 million women in the world’s poorest countries by 2020.
At the London Summit on family planning, held on July 11 co-hosted by the UK Government’s Department for International Development and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Andrew Mitchell the Secretary of State for International Development, “This is a breakthrough for the world's poorest girls and women which will transform lives, now and for generations to come. The commitments made at the Summit today will support the rights of women to determine freely, and for themselves, whether, when and how many children they have.”
President Yoweri Museveni said as leaders, there was need to address reproductive health needs in the context of socioeconomic transformation, he pledged to increase family planning funding in Uganda to $ 5 million per year. "This is a small figure, [but it] will give us a higher threshold to deal with this problem eventually. This will be supported by the development partners – the other portion of the $5 million. To prevent stock out of family planning supplies, the government will improve the distribution of reproductive health supplies to public and private units. Our plans are set out in a road map that we are sure will help achieve our goal of universal access and of reducing maternal and child mortality and achieving the Middle Income Country status, ”he said.
In Uganda the unmet need for family planning stands at 41 per cent but with new commitments and increased funding, this is bound to change.
