Ubos predicts hurdles in this year’s census

The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (Ubos) has predicted challenges in the forthcoming population census which it says will affect the speed at which the exercise will be conducted.

Speaking at a media briefing on Feb.22 at the bureau’s head offices in Kampala, Francis .W. Mashate, the national census coordinator said they expect problems like heavy rains, limited funding and failure by the people to stay at home during the exercise.

“Most pastoralists in northern Uganda keep moving searching for pasture and that means it is hard to find them home,” Mashate said.

He urges the public to be cooperative during the exercise that kicks off in August this year to help the bureau obtain appropriate results which will be vital for planning purposes.

The country carries out the exercise after 10 years to determine the total population and its distribution to help government appropriately determine where to allocate resources and improve service delivery.

The theme for 2012 census is “Counting for Planning and Improved Service Delivery”. Mashate said the private sector also relies on census data in order to have an accurate picture of the market in which to invest.

Uganda last carried out the population census in 2002.  According UBOS the Population of Uganda was 24.2 million in 2002 having increased from 2.5 million in1911 reflecting nearly a 10-fold increase over a 90-year period.
