Poor garbage disposal left four people dead and others injured in Makindye a Kampala Suburb after a heavy down pour blocked drainage and caused flooding which led to the collapse of a building killing four.

The incident happened on February 19 after a long spell of drought. Zahrah Luyinika Sekibaala the Makindye West representative and chairperson for public health and Environment said that they were sorry about the incident and that the case was going to be treated as an emergency since her area is densely populated.

“The houses are in a weak state and de-silting and removal of garbage around the area should be done. The drains are poor and people need to be engaged in removing and disposing of garbage appropriately,” Sekibaala said.

The deceased include Timothy Ssemakula, Trevor Luyiima, Harriet Nangubi and an unidentified person, while their father is still hospitalized and in a critical condition.

There are other similar cases that have been reported in Kampala the capital city and other areas in the country that have caused loss of life and destruction of property.
