On Jan 30, 13 pharmaceutical companies announced a combined joint effort to accelerate progress toward eliminating or controlling 10 neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) by the end of the decade.
The joint effort that will see the U.S., U.K. and U.A.E governments, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Bank and other global health organisations working together announced a new strategy “Accelerating work to overcome the global impact of neglected tropical diseases—A roadmap for implementation, that sets targets for what can be achieved by the end of the decade” will guide efforts to fight against the tropical diseases.
The companies pledged to provide monies that will sustain and expand existing drug donation programs to meet demand through 2020; share expertise and compounds to accelerate research and development of new drugs and reach the 2020 goals and ending the neglect. The partners will work together to improve the lives of the 1.4 billion people worldwide affected by NTDs, most of whom are among the world’s poorest.
After the announcement , Adetokunbo O. Lucas the former director of the UNICEF/UN Development Programme/World Bank/World Health Organisation Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases said innovative partnerships such as this that partner the resources of private-sector players with those of public-sector health programmes, governments, and aid organisations have the potential to make immense progress against these diseases where individual efforts or bilateral partnerships are not enough.
Adetokunbo urges endemic countries such as Uganda to make commitments and ensure that the newly available medications can be effectively delivered to those who need them since the country has already introduced an innovative, integrated programme to combat neglected tropical diseases.
According to the Neglected Tropical Disease Control Program, Uganda suffers from schistosomiasis, onchocerciasis, trachoma, lymphatic filariasis, and soil-transmitted helminthiasis cases which are all endemic with nearly 30 million people at risk of one or more of these neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) which can cause sickness and severe disability.
