They passed on in 2008

Several people passed away in 2008 across the country but among them were deaths which attracted more attention.    Like the death of the eighty-seven year old Kyabazinga of Busoga Henry  Muloki who succumbed to cancer of the throat on November 1, at Mulago Hospital’s Cancer Institute. Muloki who ascended to the throne in 1955 aged 34 was the longestsurviving traditional ruler in the country.

On June 21, Dr. Sulaiman Kigundu passed away in a South African hospital.   The man who served as the governor for Bank of Uganda from 1986-1990 also founded the Greenland Bank in 1995.

The bank which was hugely successful crumbled and was in a surprise move closed down.  Kigundu served a  six month sentence in Luzira prison for defrauding his own bank, but he persistently cited political persecution by government. At the time of his death he was the national chairman of the opposition FDC party.

Another death that got many people talking was Ms. Gertrude Kabwasingo,  wife  to  Boniface Byanyima. She passed away on November 13 following a stroke. President  Museveni’s  failure  to attend the burial of a woman under whose roof he lived for many years, raised eyebrows. Boniface’s funeral message pointed out why. He narrated how his family lost part of their ranch in Kiruhura district in late 1980s and government security personnel beat up his  porters  and  wife  following orders from “above”

Uganda lost an agriculturalist icon in Dr Israel Kibirige Ssebunya, the state minister for agriculture, also MP for Kyadondo North, who died from the cancer of the tongue. The renowned scientist died on October 8 at Mulago Hospital.   Popular for his humour and down to earth manner, Ssebunya made a mark for his research on colonal coffee.

MP Vicky Kyaka joined the long list of Ugandans, who have perished in needless road accidents. The 43-year-old legislator for Isingiro was returning to Kampala after attending her husband’s graduation at Nkozi University. In another shocking road accident, MP Henry Banyenzaki lost three sisters and a brother-in-law in when their car crashed into a trailer on the Ntungamo-Kabale road.

Another legislator, Omwony Ojwok 60, died on November 10 of heart failure at Mulago Hospital. Lawyer Ojwok is remembered for his role in bringing together various factions of Ugandans in exile to fight Idi Amin’s regime. He was the State Minister for Planning in the finance ministry, an NRM historical and MP for Labwor in Abim district.

The solution to Uganda’s problem is the overthrow of Museveni's current government. It has made a mockery of the democratic wishes and aspirations of Ugandans. It is has been in power too long, but
