While the other political parties are calling for their delegates conferences to prepare for the 2011 elections, the Uganda People Congress (UPC) still has issues to settle before it calls for a delegate’s conference.
The party has to first solve the High Court injunction slapped onto it over the suspension of four of its senior members. Peter Walubiri, Okello Okello, Chris Opio and Patrick Rubaihayo were suspended for insubordination by creating a rival structure to that of the party.Â
The party is looking at having the suspended members return as it says their suspension was done in a wrong way. The party at the end of last week held talks to resolve the issue of the suspended party members.
The court injunction stopped elections of party officials at the lower levels up to the district level. The UPC secretary General Chris Opoka said in spite of the court injunction, the party will be in time for the interparty arrangement of fielding a single candidate to challenge President Yower Museveni in the 2011elections.
 “We shall have our delegate’s conference anytime around Marchâ€, Chris Opoka told The Independent.
According to Opoka, the contenders for the party president’s job include Olara Otunu, Jimmy Akena, Henry Mayega, Sospat Akwenyu, Yona Kanyomozi and Dr. Opul are out in the field on a national mobilization.
 He said groundwork for training and conducting the party grass root elections is ready. “The party is ready for the 2011 elections though it is worried that the Electoral Commission seems not to be ready to deliver a free and fair election,†said Opoka.
“Our only concern is the Electoral Commission because it is the most incompetent organ to supervise elections of a free and fair nature come 2011,†he said.
Meanwhile, the party explores last week conducted primaries for bi-elections in Mbale municipality. The contenders for the party Mbale municipality seat were Davis Walyemera and Eric Sakwa.Â
