Hizbul  joins al Shabaab, attacks Amisom: An Islamist group, Hizbul Islam that is reported to have rejoined the struggle against the Transitional Federal Government and the African Union peacekeepers in Somalia (Amisom) on Tuesday attacked Amisom positions in Hodon District in South Mogadishu killing about 20 people. Reports indicate that Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys, a hardliner cleric, led the group.  Sheikh Mohamed Osman Arus, the spokesman of Hizbul Islam said the Tuesday assaults were just a preparation for even more violent attacks during the upcoming holy month of Ramadhan, the fasting month for Muslims around the world.
Bomb attacks death toll at 85: Reports indicate that nine more victims of the July 11 bomb attacks in Kampala have in the past two weeks died bringing the toll up to 85 from 76. However, Uganda Media council boss Fred Opolot told The Monitor that they needed some time to crosscheck the information while police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba said she only knows 78 deaths.
62 ant-EC protesters released: Of the opposition protestors who were arrested on Tuesday 62 have reportedly been released. The protestors tried to stage a demonstration in over 12 towns around the country after they tried to stage demonstrations in different parts of the country in order to draw the attention of the African Union delegates to the challenges of democracy in Uganda. Mr Vincent Ssekate, the police deputy spokesperson, said most of the suspects have been released on police bond. The demonstration was organised by the National Alliance for Free and Fair Elections (NAFFE) and the Inter party Corporation (IPC).Â
Gov’t to recruit over 90,000 primary school teachers: The Government is to recruit 9,549 primary school teachers in which the districts of Bushenyi, Gulu, Kabarole, Kamuli, Mbarara, Lira and Nakasongola districts are to receive the highest number of teachers. The move is intended to enable each class have a teacher before the teacher pupil ration is considered. Currently, the number of pupils in UPE schools stands at 8,000,000Â
The move will increase the number of primary school teachers on the Government payroll from the current 124,630 to 134,179. The Education Service Commission said the minimum qualification for the applicants is a Grade III Certificate and the recruitment is to be handled by the respective district service commissions.
URA in over Shs 300bn revenue shortfall: Uganda Revenue Authority has failed to collect taxes worth about Shs300 billion, reducing the country’s resource envelope. Chaired by Frank Tumwebaze, Legislators on the Finance Committee yesterday indicated that as of March this year, Shs373.53b had not been collected of which, Shs122.8b is in court, Shs98.48b at various stages of recovery and Shs2.31b in government arrears. The committee is however concerned that after failing to collect taxes from some companies, the Finance Ministry has asked Parliament to write off more than Shs4.3b, which move the committee, intends to block.
