This week marks the 25th anniversary of the Bhopal Disaster, when a gas leak at the U.S. based Union Carbide in the Indian city of Bhopal killed an estimated 15,000 people. Roughly 600,000 people were affected by the leak and it is widely considered to be the worst industrial disaster in history. In 1989, Union Carbide paid the Indian government $470m, after which it denied any liability in cleaning up the site. “People continue to die,†Satinath Sarangi, managing trustee of the Sambhavna Trust Clinic, told CNN. “This month, this week, someone would have died an untimely death because of the exposure back in 1984. And there are still 100,000 or more people suffering from chronic illnesses.â€
