South Africans celebrated former President Nelson Mandela’s 93rd birthday on 18th July. His foundation urged people to do 67 minutes of voluntary work on the day - to represent the 67 years he devoted to South Africa’s political struggle.

The anti-apartheid icon spent the day with family in his home village of Qunu in the Eastern Cape, where he was also visited by President Jacob Zuma.

Millions of schoolchildren sang him a special birthday song before lessons. The song Happy Birthday Tata Madiba - specially composed for his 93rd birthday - was sung at school assemblies across the country.

Pop star and actress Jennifer Lopez and singer Marc Anthony are divorcing after seven years of marriage. “This was a very difficult decision,” the pair said in a statement. “We have come to an amicable conclusion. We appreciate the respect of our privacy.”

The couple have three-year-old twin children. Lopez, 41, and Anthony, 42, toured together and starred together in the 2006 film El Cantante.

The film was a biopic of Puerto Rican singer Hector Lavoe. The divorce will be Lopez’s third and Anthony’s second. In January Lopez became a judge on American Idol.

  • Peter Falk, the American actor most famous for his role as scruffy TV detective Columbo, has died aged 83. The actor died peacefully at home in Beverly Hills on June 23 night.
  • He had been suffering from dementia for a number of years. Peter Falk won four Emmys for his cigar-chomping role as the deceptively bumbling Columbo, and was nominated for Oscars in 1960 and 1961 for Murder Inc and Pocketful of Miracles.

Zambia’s first elected President Chiluba dead

  • Frederick Chiluba, Zambia’s first democratically elected president, died at his home on June 18 at the age of 68. Chiluba was hailed as Zambia’s “liberator” by his supporters when he came to office in 1991 after 27 years of single party Socialist rule. He won praise for his economic and political reforms but was later accused of embezzlement and turning a blind eye to corruption. The immediate cause of his death was not readily established but he was known to have heart problems.
  • Under Chiluba, Zambia was considered to be a model of African democracy and his presidency was welcomed in the West. The former trade union leader and son of a copper miner introduced many reforms which dismantled the restrictive policies of former President Kenneth Kaunda. But he was dogged by corruption accusations and was accused of taking an authoritarian approach to his political opponents, firing critical colleagues and jailing outspoken journalists. He attempted to alter the constitution to allow him to run for a third term in office in 2001, but stood down after huge public protests.
  • Chiluba was prosecuted for alleged embezzlement in 2002 but acquitted after a six-year trial.
  • In 2007, he was convicted of fraud by a London court and ordered to repay $58m in embezzled funds, but the ruling was never carried out by Zambia.
  • He spent his final years at his residence in Lusaka, confined by ill health and the confiscation of his passport by the authorities.
