The rebellion had been largely smothered in the entire country and government troops were preparing to overrun Benghazi when the West intervened. I therefore don't understand how one can say that intelligence showed the rebels were going to win, yet all evidence is to the contrary. Even with the support of NATO through its massive bombing campaign, it took a good 6 months for the rebels to finally capture the capital. I proffer that the West had it in for Gadhafi for a long time, despite their outward displays of rapprochement with him in the last few years; they were just biding their time until an opportunity would present itself whereby a much more pliable alternative could be found. - Apuli

Asking the wrong question

Asking why the west does something in Africa is, in this day and age, the wrong question. It encourages silly conspiracy theories and impressions of imperialism. I prefer to ask HOW COME. How come Libya is in this situation? Simple
Oil, terrorism, dictatorship, 42 years, human rights abuse, corruption to name a few. These issues exist in several African nations and not only Libya. As long as these endemic African leadership problems remain there will always be a sense of conspiracy and imperialism. We all know the answer to why but it's now time to get an answer to the actual cause of the state we find ourselves in - Marvin ya Kuku

Mwendha , is in favor of m7's programs of Mal-education for all , poverty for all, all for m7 and non for Ugandans to keep m7 in power , Gaddafi was fought by his own people , he had to go just as m7 has to go !
Who there would a day when m7 would look like Obote of 1980 ? Uganda has gone back to the 1980s and m7 is the Obote of then now , we haven't done anything much and the blood of Luwero was spelt for No reason - Major Adam Kifaliso

What this was a former ruling class. (the former maniac dictators before ghaddafi) that were very very unpopular getting their power back. With the help of al queda and Nato. Not only that but these" rebels" had gone around lynching black africans because they believe in a arab only libya. There are also muslim extremists in there , with clans. the old royal family and ofcourse al -queda. This war was about ghaddafo introducing a new arab curreny backed by gold. that would have damaged the american economy severly. China and Russia were also heavily invested in their oil. Just good old american imperialism at it again with the help of the gullable and ignorant people like the one that wrote this article. - Julien

It was just his time to go: it reached critical mass, and it happened. And it needed to, he was awful, one of the worst there was.

Also regarding the duplicity of the CIA and MI6: they were stuck between a rock and a hard place before... lots of terrorists came from Libya and the crazy man's regime, and they were trying to work with the regime there to reduce them... Without widespread support they couldn't just drop bombs ages ago, so they had to try something else. Yes, sometimes that means working with the devil incarnate, it happens... it's not nice is it, but it does happen. Just be glad things are different now, whew.

Why does everyone have to put all the blame/credit with one group or another? In today's global community it was many forces working together, not just one or the other by themselves.

Also, why does everyone have to condemn any and all help that may have had ulterior motives? Yes, some conspiracies could cause a lot of problems down the road, but what else do you do, ban 99.9% of people from doing anything? Every single person in the universe has their motives, don't kid yourself that you or anyone else is ever non-biased. It's just a matter of managing it, and doing the best you can with what you have, and hoping that it will all balance itself out mostly. That's what democracy is, a balancing act.

I think we should not distort facts here. If NATO did not clear the roads with its bombs, the Libyan rebels would not even gain a kilometre of Libya. Andrew is absolutely right when he says NATO removed Gaddafi. - Dian Kenneth

Libyans - not NATO - removed Gadhafi, whose Reproachment with the West was too Little too Late

Most crucially Sarkozy, who is due for reelection, was taking political heat for mishandling regime change in Ivory Coast, a former French colony, felt obliged to act as swiftly and aggressively as he did to, under the guise of implementing the UN No Fly Zone, attack and stop the Gadhafi forces at Benghazi. But in the end Libyans – not NATO – removed Gadhafi. The time of Gadhafi’s brutal regime had finally run out of luck and time. Not even NATO controls history. Besides the world is now ever so interconnected that any one oblivious of this global reality or ignores it does so at their own peril. - Ocheto

Not only do governments spy on the people they do that to each other. But the reasons Gadhafi fell as soon as he did were: he became too isolated (bombing Pan AM, supporting and fomenting civil wars around the world) and exposed (Arab Spring and the rebellion in, Benghazi, the east of Libya). His rapprochment towards the west was too little too late. He was not well regarded within the Arab League and the UN. To add to the absurdity of his situation was he came to rely on a weak African Union, which was actually financially depended on him. Once the UN and Arab League support became non-existent, NATO had the cover to act. - Ocheto
