Malta votes to allow divorce

Malta has voted “Yes” to allow legalising divorce. 72%, of the electorate voted on May 28, 2011 on whether divorce should be introduced in Malta.

Malta is the only EU country not to allow divorce. “Even though the result is not what I wished for, now it is our duty to see that the will of the majority is respected,” Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said.

“The result in favour of divorce is not the result I wanted but now we will see that the will of the majority is executed and a divorce law is enacted,” he said.

The Catholic Church, which is very influential in the archipelago, had also supported a “No” vote during the campaign.

The leader of the “Yes” movement, Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando, of the governing Nationalist Party, said: “It brings Malta into a new era where the state and the Church are separate.”
