Standard Chartered Bank to acquire stake in Absa

Standard Chartered Group will acquire the South African custody and trustee business of Absa Bank, an official statement released by the bank on April 19 reads.

The statement says the acquisition builds on the significant investment Standard Chartered has already made in its African franchise.

The Uganda shilling continues on its strong footing against the US dollar in a market that has seen increased supply levels of dollars on account of renewed interest from portfolio investors in the Uganda's fixed income space, Stephen Kaboyo, the managing director at Alpha Capital Partners said on April 16.

Alongside that, Kaboyo said, the market is riding on positive sentiment ramped up by indications that the oil sector stalemate has been resolved.

All businesses need customers and most of them are in sectors that have regulators. The challenge most businesses must juggle is how to please both the customer and regulator without gaining on one side but losing on the other.  Even the best business can get an unhappy customer.

Kiwanuka speaks out on housing sector

Finance Minister Maria Kiwanuka has said that the increased demand for housing pegged to increasing levels of incomes and falling poverty levels, the housing market will continue to grow and provide a viable long-term portfolio for financial institutions.

Kiwanuka made the remarks at a breakfast launch of the Habitat for Humanity International Housing Finance Program in Kampala on April 5.

 

Regional currencies seen stronger

The Standard Chartered financial markets team has said that regional currecnies have remained somewhat stronger for the week ending April 4.

The team said the Ugandan shilling is likely to be range-bound over the next week but could potentially weaken as buoyant economic growth fuels expectations of a surge in greenback demand.

By the end of week (April 5), commercial banks quoted the currency   at 2,595/2,605 per US dollar, from last week's close of 2,590/2,600.
