Kagame is Rwanda's Gramci

E-mail Print PDF

What better way to appreciate President Kagame for his new role as Rwanda's Antonio Gramci. Antonio coined the term organic intellectual to refer to a people who realise they have a problem and fight to overcome them. He further argued that solutions to problems lie within the problem itself.

Speaking to residents in the Eastern Province, President Kagame reminded them that solutions to the challenges the country faces lie among Rwandans themselves and not foreigners.

Rwanda motorists switch to the left

In was reported in the East African that a majority of Rwandans are keeping left while driving as opposed to the status quo.

According to a study commissioned by the ministry of infrastructure it is cheaper to own and maintain right-hand-drive. But President issued a directive in 2005 banning further importation of right-hand vehicles. The right-hand vehicles were expected to be phased out in four years from the date of the presidential directive. The move will harmonise Rwanda's traffic rules with those of the rest of the East African community which she has joined.

Ex-minister sent to jail for two years

They say, man eateth where he worketh, but what happens when the food chokes you? Well, former minister Bikoro Munyanganizi will answer that. He was sentenced to two years in jail after being found guilty of corruption. Together with the representative of Espina, Duenas Herrara and Bosco Bavakure of the national purification programme will serve three and one respectively. All the accused were found to have a hand in the concealment of building tiles which were to be used in the national water purification project. All items of the project were tax exempted. This could be a stern warning to those who may want to use their offices to amass wealth with impunity.

Genocide fugitive arrested

You can run but you can never hide. That became true of Gregoire Ndahimana, who has been hiding in the Democratic Republic of Congo since the genocide ended in 1994. He is accused of killing the Tutsi who had sought refuge at the Nyange parish. The arrest was a result of improving relations between Rwanda and DR Congo, which has led to sharing of intelligence information about either country's fugitives.

At least spell it correctly

The correct name is Antonio Gramsci and not Gramci
Don't be taken away by enthusiasm

The Independent guilty of a degree of hype? Rwanda's post-genocide reconstruction is a success story and many developments are commendable. But we also know, thanks to material written on the subject, that donors have invested massively in the reconstruction and development of the Rwandan economy. See for instance S. Marysse et el., 'The aid "darlings" and "orphans" of the Great Lakes region in Africa', European Journal of Development Research 19, 3 (2007) pp. 433-58

Rev Amos,
I do appreciate your sincerity about Rwanda's success story. As for the the donors having invested in the country massively, i wish to remind you that all developing nations are recepients of donor funding! The challenge is" the effectiveness of such funds".
In any case, donors attach conditions to their dollars so ,for a country to measure up to donors conditions is worth appreciating!
I wish we would have many kagames of our times!

I could not have put it any better way. Truth be told, Rwanda despite recieving "lots" of foreign reconstruction aid, have out-performed even post 1979 Uganda in utilising that aid effectively. A case that springs to mind is the recent story regarding fibre-optic cable laying. Rwanda have laid an equivalent mileage (that equates to their entire back-bone) of infrastructure for less than half the price that Uganda has managed for the first phase of equivalent mileage. Possibly the revered reverand can throw at us further research papers that may throw some blue light on this one too.
I don't make the comparisons easily

Stephen & Emperror - the point I was making, which seems to have gone over your heads, is the inclusion of donor funding as a crucial element in Rwanda's economic success stroy. It does not underrate Kagame's role. I did not see how Antonio Gramsci ('organic intellectual'; 'hegemony') was related to the rest of the article. I still believe that comparisons between Uganda and Rwanda should be made with extreme care. The two countries have different histories and different problems. First time I have been referred to as 'revered Reverend'. Reverend is enough. I argue my points (always) like all fallible human beings.

Has the figure who hides behind the psuedonym of "Emperror" changed his mindset? He always writes in defence of the ruling party in Uganda
