Yield hunters keep shilling strong

Last week the local unit held on its gains against the greenback trading in narrow range of 2300-25 with mild activity eventually closing 2305/15 compared to the previous close of 2315/25.

Markets saw matched interest as demand from the manufacturing and energy sectors was well met with inflows from yield hunters.  Treasuries firmed in the midweek auction as investors rushed for the attractive yields with the one year paper registering the biggest drop of over 500 basis points to 19.1% down from 24%.

Denis Mashanyu, a forex trader, expects this week to remain calm for Ugandan shilling as investor appetite for Ugandan debt remains high. “We expect the market   to remain well supported at 2290 with 2340 level capping the top side,” he said.

With the bias still on a stronger shilling, yields are expected to keep on the downward trend as activity in the secondary market improves.
