The Bujagali power dam is especially “a very emblematic project” for France’s idea of African development and the G20, Henri de Raincourt, the French Minister for Cooperation, has said.
Speaking during a guided tour of the dam on December 8, Raincourt described the project as one of the “most important projects in Uganda.”
“The implementation of sustainable infrastructure, capable of opening up the most remote areas, to provide the required energy to both urban and rural areas or even to draw a link between regions, is a necessity for any sustainable and environmentally friendly development project. Indeed, it is equally essential for peace and stability of countries,” he said
“The engineers in charge of manufacturing and installation of turbines have assured me that the first 50 MW will be available soon and I am confident about that.”
He said the construction of the dam had also illustrated Uganda’s potential in the field of renewable energy, especially hydropower and at a time of climate change, such an investment was essential in the move towards clean energy, which France supports. Representatives of Bujagali Energy Ltd, Salini, Alstom, Coyne & Bellier and Arcotechnologie, attended the function. Through Proparco and several French banks as well as the technical expertise from Alstom and Coyne & Bellier, France is heavily represented on the project.
“By supporting such projects, France expresses its commitment to support Uganda in its determined march towards growth and modernity, “he said.
