Total Uganda has embarked on a road safety campaign aimed at curbing the rate of accidents in the country.
Speaking at a media briefing in Kampala on November 14, Ada Eze, the managing director, said the campaign dubbed, “I drive safe, I save lives,” is aimed at sensitizing road users including drivers, pedestrians and cyclists on observing speed limits and traffic signs, avoiding drink-driving, using of seatbelts and crash helmets.
It will also urge motorists to use vehicles in good mechanical condition and holding valid driving licenses.
“We are determined to spread the road safety message to many Ugandans so as to curb the number of deaths and injuries on our roads,” Ada said.
Racheal Nganwa, the Road Safety Unit head at UNRA, said the government needed more support from the private sector to save lives on roads. “The government can’t do this work alone. It needs support from all members of the public,” she said. According to 2010 figures from the Ministry of Works and Transport, road accidents in the country have killed about 21,807 people since 2000, whilst another 120,121 people have been seriously injured.
