Gulf Air, Bahrain’s national carrier, will re-launch flights to Uganda next month, a top official has announced. Mr Karim Makhlouf, the Gulf Air chief commercial officer, told journalists at a press briefing on October 20 that the airline returns to Entebbe after 8 years, as part of their strategy to service underserved niche markets. The airline will fly non-stop between Bahrain and Entebbe from December 5.
It will fly four times a week, operating an Airbus A320 in a two-class configuration of 16 seats in Falcon Gold and 120 in Economy and capacity to carry four tonnes of cargo. The airline according to Makhlouf, has the largest network in the Middle East, and hopes to transport more than 60,000 passengers in the first year. He said Gulf Air will give travelers an alternative carrier to the Middle East, Europe and Asian destinations. Entebbe joins a list of almost a dozen new routes including Nairobi and Addis Ababa that have been launched in 2011. It flies to 54 cities worldwide. Makhlouf said the airline would be a big boost to the Ugandan tourism industry as well as trade and business travel between Uganda and Middle East and Asia. The airline will also be launching direct flights to Juba, South Sudan, from February 7 next year
