High levels of toxic chemicals have been found in Plastic shoes raising concern about the health hazards contained in these throw away items the world over.
A study released last week by the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (SSNC) found high levels of a toxic chemical known as diethyl-hexyl phthalate (DEHP) in 17 out of 27 pairs of shoes manufactured in various countries including India, Indonesia, Tanzania, The Philippines, Sweden and South Africa.
The chemical are said to cause cancer, severe damage to a developing foetus and the central nervous system.

An analysis carried out for different types of harmful chemicals, found a pair of sandals imported from Brazil to contain the highest concentration of DEHP of all the shoes in the global sample, with the substance constituting 23 % of the total weight of the shoe.
