Hilda Kawuki, the Ugandan aid worker abducted by six armed men in the Northern Darfur town of Kutum, three weeks ago is still being held by her captors.

Hilda Kawuki, who was working for Goal, an Irish - Non Governmental Organization was kidnapped together with her colleague Sharon Commins, a Canadian national from their compound on July 3.

The Director Regional Cooperation, Ambassador Ahmed Senyomo says that negotiations are ongoing to free Hilda Kawuki. The aid workers are being held by an unknown group of rebels in the war torn Darfur region.

According to Ambassador Ahmed Senyomo, a delegation of Ugandan diplomats led by Uganda Ambassador to Sudan Betty Akech, the Irish Ambassador to Cairo, Gerald Carr and officials from the Sudan government made contacts with the abductors.

The government delegation managed to make contacts with the abductors and talked to them and the two ladies on phone through elders in Darfur. Ambassador Senyomo confirmed the abductors are demanding for ransom but did not know how much.

The Ambassador declined to reveal whether government had paid the ransom saying it could jeopardize the negotiations. Ambassador Senyomo said the negotiations to release Hilda Kawuki were promising but they might take time.

The abduction of GOAL staffers is the third case of kidnapping since the arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court against the Sudanese President last March.

Since, five aid workers from Medicines Sans Frontiers – Belgium and two from the French Aide Medical International had been abducted and released later.
