2 billion for presidential candidates-EC

E-mail Print PDF

Electoral Commission is planning to spend over two billion shillings to buy vehicles for ten presidential candidates for the 2011 presidential elections.

Each Presidential candidate will get a VIP vehicle at 130 million, and an escort pickup of 70 million shillings.

Sam Rwakoojo, the Electoral Commission Secretary says that the budget could shoot-up depending on the number presidential candidate.

He says that going by the number of ten candidates, the commission will also require two hundred million shillings to facilitate each candidate at the cost of twenty million shillings per candidate.

Over all the entire electoral process will cost the taxpayer 198 billion shillings which is yet to be released by Electoral commission.

Bukhooli North MP, Stephen Baka Mugabi says that the planned expenditure on cars is too high and should be slashed.

However, Bushenyi Woman MP Mary Karoro Okurut says that stringent guidelines should be instituted at the time of registration to limit the number of presidential candidates.

She says that some candidates may just rush for the registration to take advantage of the benefits like cars and the facilitation.

But Rwakoojo says the commission has no powers to lock out any presidential candidate as long as they meet the requirements until parliament revises the electoral laws.

Indeed Mrs Karoro it will help very much for the security and tranquility of this country if every recognized tribe of Uganda can put up its own candidate for President. What seems to be happening in the current NRM multi-party democracy process are real stringent guidelines that indirectly try to bar many Presidential candidates so that the Movement system of governace is sustained in rule and dictatorship. In the mean time the country is being run bankrupt using expensive methods of running national election using taxpayers hard earned cash. There is nowhere other than most probably in the State of Buganda where government buisness is run voluntarily!

No way is the next democratically elected free and fair government that is going to accept this sort of corrupt methods of running national elections by a partisan Electrol Commissioner. This institution is a profit making buisness entity not a public service office.
